The pandemic has deprived Las Vegas of an important part of its economic model. Even after casinos were allowed to open (at first with lots of restrictions), big events stayed away. Conventions, involving large gatherings of people, made no sense in a time of social distancing and cancellations piled up, leaving Las Vegas without a draw.

Conventions give people an excuse to go to Las Vegas. It’s very different from asking your partner or loved one to take a trip to Las Vegas for no other reason than to “have” to go to work.

Las Vegas is in the midst of another transition that could change the city’s skyline and raise the city’s international profile.

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — The Las Vegas Loop project took a giant leap forward on Friday when the Boring Company brought its tunnel system under the Strip to Resorts World.

The Las Vegas Loop is expected to connect resorts up and down the Strip, extending to downtown, Orleans, UNLV and – one day – the airport.

But this first step beyond the Las Vegas Convention Center, where the system is already operating, is an important development in the progress of the project. The tunnel systems use Tesla electric vehicles.

The head of the digging machine crossed the earth on Friday, facing south along a path just west of the Strip passing a likely location for a resort that Resorts World had already posted on signs inside from the station.

The first steps of the Las Vegas Loop will be connecting to Resorts World and Wynn Las Vegas, both of which have agreements in place. After that, it is unclear in which direction the construction will go.

The project is greenlit with Clark County through a franchise agreement. The cost should be between the bus fare and a typical charge via Uber or Lyft.

The company’s plan is to extend the loop to 29 miles. It would have 51 stops along the Las Vegas Strip corridor, including downtown and Allegiant Stadium.

The company says visitors and locals will be able to use the system. No taxpayer money will be used. The deal is that the Boring Company will fund the tunnels and the hotels will pay for the construction of their own stations.

Located on a man-made island in the United Arab Emirates, Wynn Resorts’ new development will feature more than 1,000 rooms, an upscale shopping mall, restaurants, lounges and more.

The project marks Wynn’s big bet on a tourist outpost halfway around the world – while at home the casino operator has yet to say what it would do with a chunk of land from the other side of the street.

Wynn has partnered with developer Marjan and hotel owner RAK Hospitality Holding to build a multi-billion dollar resort on Al Marjan Island, located in Ras Al Khaimah, one of the seven emirates that make up the United Arab Emirates, according to a Press release Tuesday.

The project – which is expected to include meeting and convention space, an “exclusive spa”, entertainment and a “gaming zone” – is expected to be completed in 2026, the statement said.

Wynn is not the first Las Vegas casino company to venture into the Middle East, nor the only one with a large piece of land in southern Nevada where it could build a new hotel.

But just over four years after Wynn announced it was acquiring 38 acres next to the Fashion Show mall for $336 million, it still hasn’t confirmed what it will do with the property, the former long vacant New Frontier home.

“Continue to develop our ideas”

Wynn Resorts spokesman Michael Weaver said in a statement for this column that the company will be the UAE resort’s operating partner, receive a management fee and hold a “minority financial interest in the project”.

He noted that Al Marjan Island is a 45-minute drive from one of the busiest airports in the world, Dubai International Airport, and offers a “pristine white sand beach”.

He also said 17 new hotels will open by 2024 in Ras Al Khaimah, “increasing its appeal as a strong regional tourist destination.”

As for the land on Las Vegas Boulevard, he said, “We continue to evolve our ideas for the 38 acres across from Wynn Las Vegas and look forward to developing it when the time is right.

In some ways, that’s hardly a surprise, given the property’s history and Las Vegas’ harrowing experience during the pandemic.

Changing fortunes, changing hands

Israeli investors bought the New Frontier in 2007 for more than $1.2 billion and imploded it with plans to develop a luxury resort. But Las Vegas’ frenzied housing boom quickly died down, the economy crashed, and the project never got built.

Australian billionaire James Packer acquired the site through foreclosure in 2014 and set out to build the 1,100-room Alon Las Vegas. But Packer reportedly struggled to raise funds for the project, and his company Crown Resorts put the land up for sale.

Wynn Resorts announced a deal in December 2017 to acquire the site, and founder Steve Wynn told analysts in January 2018 that he wanted to move quickly on a project there.

A few days later, the Wall Street Journal reported that Wynn had a decades-long pattern of sexual misconduct. Wynn, who called the allegations “preposterous”, quickly resigned as his company’s chief executive officer, citing “an avalanche of negative publicity”.

“There will always be demand”

Meanwhile, Las Vegas attendance increased significantly from 2020 when the pandemic hit and tourism plunged, but it has not returned to pre-pandemic levels.

More than 32 million people visited America’s casino capital last year, up from 19 million in 2020 but down from 42.5 million in 2019, according to the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority reported.

When asked if Wynn thinks there is, or will be, sufficient demand for more megaresorts along the Strip, Weaver pointed to “the incredible increase in demand for Las Vegas among domestic leisure and gaming customers in 2021,” and added that the company “firmly believes” Las Vegas will remain a “preferred global destination for years to come.”

“And with that backdrop, there will always be demand for the quality experiences that Wynn delivers,” he added.

Will these experiences include a new casino across from its glitzy Wynn Las Vegas and Encore towers? Will this sprawling site remain undeveloped land for years to come?

Your guess is as good as mine.

Advertisers will be able to affix their brand seal to the Monorail and Las Vegas Convention Center Loop shuttle system.

Under a three-year contract with the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority, New York-based Intersection is partnering with the agency to provide advertising options along both transport routes.

Options include signage wrapped in the train on the 3.9-mile above-ground monorail system and digital and static displays inside the loop, according to a press release.

The Loop, which began operating earlier this year, transports conventioneers in Tesla electric vehicles under the convention center’s sprawling 200-acre campus.

Plans are in place for the system – which carries passengers 40 feet below ground level – to be extended across the Las Vegas tourist corridor in the coming years.

“Las Vegas is the perfect city for brands to reach millions of diverse consumers, whether it’s reaching a vibrant local audience or an influx of tourists from around the world,” said Scott Goldsmith, President and CEO of the operation of Intersection.

Ingrid Reisman, vice president of marketing for LVCVA, said the contract with the New York-based company will be “an innovative and valuable advertising solution to generate additional revenue” for the organization.

Intersection’s work can be found on media networks in cities such as Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, Seattle, Boston, Dallas, and San Francisco.

The company said its offerings can reach around 60 million people nationwide.

LAS VEGAS (AP) – A company run by Tesla Inc. chief Elon Musk crossed a hurdle Wednesday in its plan to drill an underground highway under the Las Vegas Strip that could one day connect the busy international airport from the city and the downtown casino shopping mall.

The Clark County Commission unanimously approved a special use permit for The Boring Co. to submit plans for some 29 miles (47 kilometers) of twin tunnels dubbed Vegas Loop.

An overall cost was not disclosed. Las Vegas Convention and Tourism Authority chief Steve Hill said it could cost up to $ 1 billion and would be privately funded.

The tunnel system would connect to an existing convention center loop that the company began operating in June. He takes trade show attendees in Tesla electric vehicles between stops on the expanded campus of the Las Vegas Convention Center.

The elected body with the jurisdiction of Strip has awarded Boring a 50-year franchise agreement to operate the system, collect rates, and manage advertising and partnerships. A quarterly county franchise payment would be income-based.

The county’s approval is for the alignment of the proposed route, the Las Vegas Review-Journal reported. Each of the 51 proposed stops will require separate approval.

Officials said the construction would be paid for by Boring Co. with stations funded by casinos, resorts and landowners.
