By BRYAN HORWARTH, Las Vegas Sun

LAS VEGAS (AP) – When he started working at the Culinary Institute of America in 2004, Douglas Kim had every intention of becoming a chef.

This was before he discovered how fascinating studying wine can be thanks to a compulsory three-week course that set his career on a new trajectory.

MGM Resorts International recently announced the promotion of Kim, a master sommelier, to the role of wine manager for its Las Vegas resorts.

Kim, a South Korean native who grew up in Chicago, now oversees nearly 50 sommeliers and around 350,000 bottles of wine at MGM bars and restaurants along the Strip.

Political cartoons

“At first I thought cooking would be really fun,” Kim said. “After taking this course, I started to think wine would be more fun than cooking, so this is the path I took. There is so much to wine – history, geography, so many great stories.

After graduating from the institute in Hyde Park, New York, Kim wanted to get her bachelor’s degree and decided to move to Las Vegas to study at UNLV.

“For any food and beverage professional, Las Vegas is one of the best places to learn about food and wine very quickly,” Kim said. “We see crazy bottles opened every night and cheap bottles opened every night.”

The most expensive bottle of wine a guest can order at an MGM property on the Strip is a top-notch French pinot noir that costs around $ 70,000, Kim said.

“The prices can get pretty crazy,” Kim said. “You kind of think, ‘Okay, how much is that per sip? A good bottle of wine, you can go into the descriptors, but it’s really more about the overall experience.

It’s not every day that a guest pays so much for a bottle of wine, but bottles that range from $ 10,000 to $ 20,000 are sold on the Strip “fairly regularly,” he said.

Kim is one of less than 200 master sommeliers in North and South America nominated by an organization called the Court of Master Sommeliers.

Kim earned the title in 2018 after going through a process that took about a decade and included several reviews.

“It’s a pretty intense process,” Kim said. “It’s a full-time job when you do it. There are a lot of great summits that don’t have this certification, so it’s not all. It’s a way of showing a guest that you are an expert in the field.

Kim began her professional culinary career in Las Vegas at Restaurant Charlie before becoming Wine Manager at Picasso Restaurant at Bellagio and Sommelier at Mandalay Bay.

Dominique Bertolone, senior vice president of food and beverage strategy for MGM Resorts, said the company was lucky to have Kim.

“Douglas has been a first-class hospitality professional throughout his career,” said Bertolone. “His customer-centric approach and his willingness to always go above and beyond to create memorable moments are the key to his success. “

A typical day for Kim includes coordinating with wine vendors and vendors as he works to create and maintain wine programs for establishments at 13 MGM resorts and hotels on the Strip.

“There’s a lot of administrative stuff to do, so it’s not always glamorous,” Kim said. “I send a lot of emails every day. Ultimately, I like to go to the different restaurants themselves and talk to the sommeliers to see what they need and how I can best help them. My job is different every day.

He said his favorite part of the job is putting a new wine on a restaurant’s list. “I like to say that I don’t have a personal wine cellar, I have MGM as a wine cellar,” he said.

Kim said he liked a good glass of wine but didn’t have a favorite. In fact, if he has a drink at home, it’s often a bourbon on the rocks or a Japanese beer, he says.

David Lee Roth had happily planned to kick off his end of his stage career with a pair of New Years concerts on the Strip.

COVID has other ideas.

Diamond Dave has ended his New Years and New Years shows at House of Blues in Mandalay Bay. In a statement released Thursday, representatives for the 67-year-old frontman said, “Due to unforeseen circumstances related to COVID and out of caution for those who work and attend shows, David Lee Roth’s performance schedule is December 12. January 31, 2021 and January 1, 2022 have been canceled. Refunds will be automatically processed and ticket holders will be notified directly. “

Roth’s January 5, January 7-8, January 14-15, and January 21-22 shows are still on the books. Roth’s shows join those postponed by the Go-Go’s for New Years weekend. ’80s rockers performed New Years Eve and New Years Eve shows at the Venetian Theater for a COVID case in their camp. These performances are reset for February 11 and 12.

The former frontman of Van Halen caused a tsunami in the rock industry on October 1 by abruptly announcing he was retiring after his concerts in Vegas. In an exclusive interview in this column, Roth said in a classic fashion, “I throw in the shoes. I am retiring.

The announcement boosted ticket sales for Roth’s original five dates at House of Blues. In December, he added the four additional dates. These shows, too, have sold out.

As Roth commented, “I had no idea how many of you wanted to pay to see me go.”

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) – Las Vegas police are bracing for pre-pandemic crowds on the Las Vegas Strip on New Years Eve despite the omicron variant causing an increase in the number of cases. It is estimated that there will be 300,000 people on the Strip to ring the New Year.

This year the fireworks will return to the Las Vegas Strip and the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department plans to have 1,200 officers strategically placed along Las Vegas Boulevard and another 200 in the downtown area. Additionally, the Nevada National Guard will have over 100 troops on duty to assist with crowd control.

There will also be a lot of first responders.

“New Years Eve is usually one of the busiest nights for first responders. We will have a strong presence on the Strip, ”Clark County Deputy Fire Chief Warren Whitney said.

“It’s about safety and each of us is doing our part to make sure we are the eyes and ears of our first responders,” said Las Vegas Mayor Carolyn Goodman.

Anyone who sees something suspicious is told to call 911 or notify a police officer.

Temperatures will drop that night. He encourages all Strip visitors to wear warm clothing and comfortable shoes. In addition, no glass or metal container, cooler, stroller and any bag larger than 12x12x6 inches are prohibited on the Strip and downtown. This includes backpacks, purses and luggage.

Road closures along Las Vegas Boulevard will begin at 6 p.m. on New Years Eve and at 8 p.m. the Strip will be completely closed to motor traffic from Spring Mountain Road to Mandalay Bay Road. There will also be a curfew in effect that will ban anyone under the age of 18 without a parent on Las Vegas Boulevard and downtown.

With the pandemic not over, local leaders are urging everyone to take precautions.

“We want you to be happy and healthy and come celebrate in this amazing city and this amazing community. There is nothing else like it in the world, ”said Deputy Sheriff Christopher Darcy, LVMPD.

“We encourage everyone to look out for each other. Take personal responsibility and proactively take action that helps limit the spread of COVID-19 and keep everyone safe, ”Clark County Commissioner Michael Naft said.

This includes vaccinations, reminders, wearing an indoor mask, and staying home if you feel sick.

After a recent spate of fatal accidents with DUIs, local authorities are asking people to be responsible if they consider drinking alcohol.

“I am once again begging our community to make a transportation plan before you start your party. Do not drive if you are impaired. It’s that simple, ”Naft said.

There are many transportation options, including a free bus service on RTC until 9 a.m. on New Years Day. In addition, the monorail charges $ 1 each way for locals with ID and ridesharing companies such as LYFT offer reduced rates.

Police wish to remind visitors that while retailers can legally sell marijuana in Nevada, it cannot be consumed or smoked in a public space.

Clark County crews will begin unloading 4,000 metal crowd control barricades early Friday morning in preparation for the street party.

When the party is over, 22 sweepers will pick up around 10 to 12 tons of trash before the roads and Las Vegas Boulevard are reopened to traffic.

The final battle carried new meaning, for a show that spent 19 months returning to the stage.

“Ka” bounced back Wednesday night at the MGM Grand. Cirque du Soleil’s most lavish production, with an investment of $ 165 million and 300 cast members. The production checks Cirque’s final box among shows returning to the Strip after the company’s endlessly long COVID-forced break.

Importantly, some 1,250 Circus employees have returned to work in Las Vegas.

Cirque du Soleil Senior Vice President of Cirque du Soleil Eric Grilly took over at the company about four months before Universal Entertainment closed in March 2020. He has now seen all five Cirque shows return, with “Mystere” at Treasure Island, “O” at Bellagio, “MJ One” at Mandalay Bay and “Love” at the Mirage, in that order, preceding “Ka” on stage.

The MGM Grand Show, which opened in February 2005, took place because the grand production presented challenges on a large scale. The show was originally scheduled to reopen in October, then return over Thanksgiving weekend.

“It’s a huge theater, with a very large cast and a very large technical team needed to make it work,” Grilly said ahead of Wednesday’s relaunch. “We added a few extra weeks of rehearsal, time to take it into account… We had to replace a certain number of technicians, given the schedule of the show, as well as many artists. But even with the integration of so many people, you’re going to see a great show.

As has been evident in all of Cirque’s feedback, the company has spent the shutdown remaining brutal. The show delighted the full house in the 1,950-seat theater. The show rendered signature elements such as the Wheel of Death, stage attacks from archers and lancers, goofy clown characters from the jacks, and martial artists from the Imperial Guard.

The show’s two stage decks are back in the show, including its Sand Cliff Deck, which rotates 360 degrees and tilts toward the crowd to allow video projection. By the time the 80 ‘rod actuators’ start to come out of the bridge for performers to climb and fall when the stage is vertical, you know the Circus has returned to its shape.

“There are a handful of new artists that have been added to the show, but no significant changes have been made,” said Grilly, and mentioned some elements of the show that were improved just as he entered into his administrative role. “The show has had a bit of a refresh in 2019. It’s in great shape.” The ovation from the packed house served as an exclamation point for “Ka”.

Box office acrobatics

As has been the case with the Circus since the reopening of “Mystere” on June 28 and “O” on July 1, the cast and crew must be vaccinated and non-verbal performers are in face coverings. Theater staff wave “Masks Up” signs as easily as performers wave their crossbows, as members of the public are required to wear face masks when they are not “actively” eating or drinking.

The result, not only for Cirque but for several production shows, was a drop in attendance after the initial burst of the reopening of “Mystere” and “O”, when these shows sold out almost every performance in. July and August.

Producers said masking issues were one of the main reasons for the drop in numbers, in some cases as high as 40% since the return of indoor mask mandates in late July.

Apparently, Cirque’s midweek numbers outside of “Mystere” and “O” had dropped, and “Love” slipped through all nights. But Grilly said the slide could be attributed to the initial rush of fans arriving to satisfy pent-up demand, with the pendulum turning as this community flipped the shows they wanted to see.

“It was amazing to be almost 100 percent sold out for ‘O’ and ‘Mystere’ all summer long, and then we saw the traditional seasonal drop that we saw just around the feast of the Work, ”Grilly said. “We had a lot more families here than in the past, and we can see a decrease as they have returned home to put their children back to school. “

Grilly says business has rebounded, like a circus acrobat in an elastic harness.

“We’re having a fantastic November in all shows,” Grilly said. “Each emission will be equal to or greater than pre-pandemic levels.”

What is the next

“Zumanity” was the Cirque show that did not survive the pandemic, closed permanently in November 2020. The Cirque has since developed a new show and is refreshing the old Zumanity Theater. Aside from a limited engagement from ventriloquist ace Terry Fator and a one-off show from the “Bianca del Rio” drag show, the venue is latent.

The show will focus on a New York theme. It will likely open in the second quarter, or spring, 2022.

“We are still in the process of finalizing plans with our partners at MGM Resorts for this offering,” said Grilly. “We haven’t chosen a name yet, but we’re narrowing it down. “

The production will be different from the extravagances that have been a hallmark of Cirque since the opening of “Mystere” in 1993. The theater, while magnificent in the tradition of Circus on the Strip, has long been in need of a cure. youth.

“We’re going to be presenting things that you’ve never seen in a Circus show before,” said Grilly. “The theater is 19 years old, isn’t it? So obviously it needs to be updated. There have been a lot of technological advancements in terms of sound, lighting, projection mapping that we will be able to take advantage of and have used in our other shows.

“And then it’s going to be a very different kind of experience, both in terms of seating privacy and food and drink. That would give Cirque six shows on the Strip, not counting acquisition partnerships such as Blue Man Group and “America’s Got Talent: Live” (via The Works Entertainment), both in Luxor.

The business that seemed almost complete in the spring of 2020 has expertly bounced back.

Visiting time

Circus was supported outside of Vegas, with the return of the standout production “Alegria” to Houston, and the long-delayed Cirque-Disney partnership “Drawn To Life” opened at Disney World in Orlando. Reviews of this creative collaboration have been positive. Even longtime circus officials cried when it premiered.

Disney characters are woven into a series of traditional Circus acts, sketched out as a silhouette. The show pays homage to the elegant animation of Disney and the dazzling acrobatics of the Circus.

The Circus does most of its business in Vegas and the Strip is its artistic headquarters, but the company remains an international entity and is bringing back several of the 44 touring shows toppled by COVID. At the top of all this activity is the investment of its new ownership group, led by Capital Catalyst Group, a strong investment firm in Toronto.

“Our touring division has finally reopened, so a very important part of our business is now back up and running with the opening of Algeria last week, in fact the day before the opening of ‘Drawn to Life'”, Grilly said. “And then six more tours will be rolled out over the next few months, which is a big enough development for us to get our business back on track.”

The new bassist of ZZ Top, Elwood Francis, do not pinch with his fingers.

He uses a pickaxe instead.

This simple technique is what we will call “Impacting”.

Francis has created a new drive in this 50-year-old group.

“This is one of the hallmarks of Elwood’s playing, using a pick, and it only sharpened the attack,” ZZ Top guitarist, singer and co-founder Billy F. Gibbons said. “He can really dig. He adds a boost to the songs which is really nice.”

Francis, the band’s guitarist for 30 years, is on stage with Gibbons and Frank Beard as ZZ Top returns to the Venetian Theater from Friday to November 16. The group’s co-founder and bassist, Dusty Hill, died on July 28 at the age of 72.

ZZ Top stopped briefly in his honor, then hit the road again, which Hill told Gibbons he wanted. Gibbons also honored Hill’s request that Francis step in and continue the show.

Gibbons says the response to the updated lineup has been “quite interesting and robust”. Francis looks part of the game, sporting a beard and cheap sunglasses while playing boogie-woogie. He was adopted by the band’s legions of fans.

“The second night I looked in the audience and saw not one, not two, but three giant pieces of cardboard saying, ‘We love you Elwood!’ Gibbons said. “He graciously accepted the mission.

The show will be adapted to his location in Las Vegas, with a trio of showgirls who will rock him for “Viva Las Vegas”. It was Hill’s song originally.

In a tale famous in ZZ Top circles, Gibbons had his old friend sing it about 30 years ago, while touring the Hirsch Memorial Coliseum in Shreveport, La.

Elvis had performed in this hall in 1954 and 1955 during the legendary Louisiana Hayride concerts.

Hill sang the song from that point on, including previous shows in Las Vegas. The clip was shot on Fremont Street.

“We’ll have, and I’ll sing it now, as a sort of tribute,” Gibbons said. “This show will be a little different. We’ve added a few favorite tracks that we’ve opened up for fans to request online. We have a few favorite titles that were missing from the series.

“Those lucky enough to join us at the Venetian will be treated to something old, new and everything in between.”

Adèle, Garth … and you

Maybe someone should build a place called The Rumor Mill. Adele and Garth Brooks seem to take up space there, anyway. Twitter’s latest martial art took them both to the Colosseum at Caesars Palace next year.

Well, rumor has it that Adele will be performing at the Encore Theater at Wynn Las Vegas, the Theater at Resorts World, the Park Theater at Park MGM, and the Colosseum. Three of them have been verified, without verification, in the past eight weeks.

But his new song, for sure, will be called “Easy On Me”, which will be released on October 15th.

We checked with the usual suspects for Adele’s options, and there is no confirmation of her reservation in Las Vegas. If / when this actually happens, we will report it.

As for Brooks, we spoke to him about Las Vegas, in July just before his concert at Allegiant Stadium.

Yes, Brooks told us, he is interested in a residency in Las Vegas. He returned to his days at the Encore Theater at Wynn Las Vegas, where he was headlining from 2009 to 2014.

That level of privacy would need to be rekindled for him to be the head of yet another Strip residency show.

“I have to tell you, I don’t know how comfortable this town is Steve Wynn, but what Steve Wynn has done is make it a very intimate night out, and that’s what I’m looking for, ”said Brooks. “Some of these places, like the guys at the Park or the Caesars have – and they’re all cute guys – they have these big places, 4,000, 5,000 seats, that are all over the place. They’re a little harder to play in a one-man show or in a band. So you just wait and see what happens, but anything intimate, anything sincere, is right in my alley.

This summer catch doesn’t disqualify any venue, of course. But we can anticipate Trisha Bois of the Year appearing on a Brooks show on the Strip. As he said, “I think it’s a no-brainer to do a Garth-and-Trisha show.”

The Roth report

Not quite news, but David lee roth sold all five performances from Dec.31 to Jan.31. 8 at House of Blues in Mandalay Bay. That means the original seating set is gone, with tickets available in the aftermarket (where balcony seats cost $ 1,270 at the time of writing).

Roth’s bombshell that he is retiring after the Jan. 8 show has certainly increased the demand for that show. And, in quintessential Roth style, January 8 is Elvis’ birthday too.

We still confirm the accompanying group for the Roth race. He had a trio of mean, pointy guys in his 2020 streak. No names have come up. Maybe drummer Alex Van Halen will join the fray in what Roth says are the last shows to be performed by any version of Van Halen. We will be there no matter what.

Cool Hang Alert

Boyz II Men’s Shawn Stockman performing at the Mirage.

On November 24, “KÀ” will be back on stage at the MGM Grand, renewing Cirque du Soleil’s portfolio of production shows on the Las Vegas Strip. In just over a week, Lady Gaga will bring her “Jazz & Piano” residency shows back to Park MGM on October 14, the return of another of the Strip’s biggest live entertainment draws.

Around this time last year, smaller shows planned to reopen despite strict pandemic regulations limiting crowd sizes and requiring social distancing, masks and other safety rules. After going through a rough fall and winter and thriving in the spring and summer, entertainment in Las Vegas has indeed recovered, with most of the big shows returning to regular performances.

Among the most recent re-openings are “Opium” at Cosmopolitan, Barry Manilow and the Bronx Wanderers (separately) at Westgate, “The Terry Bradshaw Show” at Luxor, “Magic Mike Live” at the Sahara, “The Beatles LOVE” at the Mirage and Carlos Santana’s residence at the House of Blues in Mandalay Bay. Rock legends Rod Stewart (at Caesars Palace) and John Fogerty (at Wynn) return to their Strip concerts this week for the first time since the start of last year, and Gwen Stefani (at Planet Hollywood) and Wayne Newton (at the Flamingo) will do the same later this month.

Teams are working to remove the Crazy Girls “No Ifs, Ands, or Butts” statue from Planet Hollywood Casino on Tuesday, June 15, 2021. The statue, created by Michael Conine in 1997, has been installed on the Riviera. The semi-nude showgirl revue that ran at the Riviera Casino from 1988 to 2015 and Planet Hollywood from 2015 until it closed for the pandemic will remain closed until it finds a new location. The statue will be stored until then.

But there are still a handful of established production shows and headliners that haven’t been able to return to performances on the Strip and have yet to announce show dates. Each has different circumstances dictating a possible return, and some smaller shows have been moved during the pandemic and are looking for a different venue in Vegas for their return.

That’s the situation for “Crazy Girls,” the Strip’s longest-running topless magazine before the pandemic after launching on the Riviera in 1987. In 2015, she moved to Planet Hollywood’s Sin City Theater, and in May of that year Caesars Entertainment has confirmed that it will not reopen this venue, launching “Crazy Girls” and other shows. A spokesperson recently told The Sun that “Crazy Girls” producer Norbert Aleman is still looking for a perfectly suited theater.

Another sexy burlesque presentation always looking for a new venue is “X Rocks”, formerly at Bally’s. Producers Matt and Angela Stabile – Angela starred on “Crazy Girls” for years before creating her own shows – are committed to bringing the magazine back to the forefront of technology, and their company has had a strong relationship with Caesars since the early 1990s. sister shows “X Burlesque” and “X Country” are still going strong at Flamingo and Harrah’s, respectively.

As for the big hall residencies, pop singer Kelly Clarkson announced one for the Zappos Theater (the same venue Stefani performs) in 2019 which never opened in April 2020. She was initially postponed to this year but is not currently listed on the planet. Hollywood website. Clarkson took to the stage on Saturday night at the MGM Grand Garden Arena as one of the headliners of the Shaquille O’Neal Foundation benefit event, but there was no sign of her rebooting. residency this year.

Down the street at the Park Theater where Gaga will be returning and Bruno Mars has been performing since July, Aerosmith is expected to return to his residence next year. The Boston-born group was forced to cancel spring and summer shows last year, but the MGM Resorts website says Steven Tyler and his company will compose those dates and add more with a announcement coming soon. Cher was also forced to cancel performances at the Park Theater last year, but there is no indication that she will return for any other headlining shows.

And the future of Boyz II Men’s long-time residency show at the Mirage Theater is hanging in the air. The successful R&B group began their career there in 2012 with Terry Fator still headlining in the same space, but the Boyz show is no longer listed on the Mirage website. SPI Entertainment founder Adam Steck, the show’s producer in Las Vegas, recently noted that the theater’s turn to spotlight magician Shin Lim could affect venue availability, but the vocal trio “likes it. really Las Vegas and wants to come back on stage ”.

LGBTQ lawyer and celebrity chef Susan Feniger has fully embraced the forgiving nature of Las Vegas. Border Grill, a modern Mexican restaurant in Mandalay Bay that it owns with chef Mary Sue Milliken offers carefully selected seasonal dishes. The restaurant recently revamped an already mouth-watering list of unlimited brunch menu items. Feniger decided she wanted to take that indulgent vibe up a few notches, but keep the restaurant aligned with her sophisticated vision of dining. “When we started this it felt like we were competing with the buffets in Vegas,” she shares. “We felt like we could do the same, but cook food to order so that it was fresh, interesting, not in a steam table and so we could ask a chef to cook it fresh. It also comes out at different times, so it’s not all stacked on one plate, ”she continues.

Border Grill’s expanded menu features everything from hash and short ribs, diablo fried chicken, lobster cachapas and more. Feniger’s menu also includes a variety of brunch libations, including two of his favorite drinks. “I love it, I love our Café de Lola with rum or Kahlua,” she shares. “I also love mezcal, so El Mezcalero is awesome. You get the smoke of mezcal, the spiciness of passion fruit, and a bit of coconut sweetness. Or give me one or two spiky and bloody Maria’s, ”she laughs. Feniger sought to truly create a warm and indulgent atmosphere after a tumultuous time in the world. She says, “We wanted to have this killer menu that would make people feel fed and fed – even overfed! Nothing is more heartwarming than hanging out, eating, drinking and relaxing after a year and a half of exhausting. Obviously, it works for Feniger – Border Grill has been voted Best Brunch on the Strip for several years.

California resident Robert Ramirez came to Las Vegas on Friday to pay tribute to the life of his little sister, Melissa Ramirez, four years to the day after being killed during the filming of the Route 91 Harvest festival on October 1, 2017, in the worst case cases. mass shooting in modern American history.

Ramirez and his family gathered with more than 200 other people in the amphitheater at the Clark County Government Center just after sunrise to participate in the annual October 1 ceremony in honor of those killed in the massacre.

“We’re here primarily to remember and make sure people don’t forget what happened,” Ramirez said. “Ever since (the shooting) happened here in Nevada, people in California have kind of forgotten what happened. It’s very different here. (The ceremony) means a lot to me, and especially to my parents.

Las Vegas‘ commitment to remember the 60 victims and survivors of the shooting was at the heart of Friday’s celebration. Tears flowed. The families of the missing greeted each other and hugged each other. A sense of shared grief has crossed the crowd even though it has been four years since an armed man, shooting from a hotel room in Mandalay Bay, killed 58 people at a country music concert. Two survivors later died from injuries sustained in the shooting. Hundreds more were injured.

Jimmy Long from Riverside, Calif., Was at the festival with a group of six that night and survived.

“That says everything”

“We have since become close to a number of people who have lost someone,” Long said after Friday’s ceremony. “That says everything. We will come here for the rest of our lives that day to remember those who did not return home that evening.

As with many survivors, Long said he continues to struggle with the mental trauma of living when so many others have died.

“This is the hardest part,” he said. ” You wonder why ? Why not me?'”

Survivor Janet Muzio Medina and her husband Randy, also from California, shared similar feelings. Janet said the remembrance ceremony is essential in dealing with the trauma, as it gives her a chance to honor those killed.

“I have to be here to celebrate (the life) of everyone who is not here,” she said.

Heather Gooze of Las Vegas, who was running the festival bar that night, was also on hand to offer support to the families of those killed.

“It is important that they see my face, that they know that we have not forgotten their angels,” Gooze said.

Sisolak, Lombardo addresses the crowd

Clark County and the Metropolitan Police Department co-hosted the event with the Clark County Fire Department and the Vegas Strong Resiliency Center. Governor Steve Sisolak told the crowd that grieving families “doesn’t get any easier”.

“Sadly, this tragedy will live on in our lives and in our memories forever,” Sisolak said. “The lives that were lost, the families and those affected will never be forgotten. … You are constantly in our hearts and in our prayers.

Clark County Sheriff Joe Lombardo said the ceremony was to be held annually to honor the victims and also to remember how Las Vegans came together to support each other after the shooting.

“We are only as strong as our ability to come together,” said Lombardo.

Dee Ann Hyatt spoke on Friday morning about the loss of her brother, Kurt Von Tillow, in the shooting. She and her daughter were both injured during the concert.

“These physical wounds have healed, but the lasting scars for our family remain and continue, as (for) all of our families and all of the families of our angels,” Hyatt said.

The sunrise ceremony was one of many activities organized this year to honor victims and survivors. The names of the victims will be read out Friday at 10:05 p.m. at the Las Vegas Community Healing Garden, 1015 S. Casino Center Blvd. in downtown Las Vegas.

As Las Vegas Police participated in the commemorations, they also used the anniversary to highlight efforts to improve preparedness.

Metro and the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department Foundation unveiled the first building constructed at the Reality Based Training Center at 7370 E. Carey Road on Friday. The center is expected to simulate realistic scenarios for first responders, including high threat scenarios.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
