The pandemic has deprived Las Vegas of an important part of its economic model. Even after casinos were allowed to open (at first with lots of restrictions), big events stayed away. Conventions, involving large gatherings of people, made no sense in a time of social distancing and cancellations piled up, leaving Las Vegas without a draw.

Conventions give people an excuse to go to Las Vegas. It’s very different from asking your partner or loved one to take a trip to Las Vegas for no other reason than to “have” to go to work.

The Las Vegas hotel community has gotten a little greener recently with the announcement of Resorts World Las Vegasthe newest resort on the Strip, that its three hotel brandsLas Vegas Hilton, Conrad Las Vegas and Crockfords Las Vegas, LXR Hotels & Resortshave won Leadership in energy and environmental design (LEED) Gold Certification, encompassing 3.9 million square feet of real estate.

Developed by the US Green Building Council (USGBC), LEED certification is considered the benchmark in the green building industry, providing building owners and operators with a framework to identify and implement practical and sustainable green building strategies. measurable.

From its inception, the development of Resorts World Las Vegas was rooted in the concept of green building, with the property’s design team focusing on reducing environmental impact and achieving long-term sustainability through environmentally friendly design.

The resort will also continue to incorporate environmentally responsible practices into day-to-day operations and future resort planning, according to Brandon Morrison, director of sustainability for Resorts World Las Vegas.

“A key pillar of our strategic plan for sustainability at Resorts World Las Vegas is the integration of practices that have positive environmental impacts into all operations,” Morrison said. “LEED Gold certification demonstrates our long-term commitment to helping improve the environment while providing premium accommodations and experiences for our guests.”

To achieve LEED Gold certification, green building design and sustainability were incorporated into all phases of the design and development process, including:

  • Existing elements of the Echelon project (a $4.8 billion mixed-use hotel-casino project proposed by Boyd Gaming that was later sold to Genting Group, the developers of Resorts World) were incorporated into the design and to the construction of the complex.
  • Over 300 trees were salvaged from the original site and incorporated into the current RWLV design. (Some trees currently on the site are up to 60 years old.)
  • Energy savings greater than 38% compared to industry benchmark. Among the energy efficiency measures, a combined heat and power system of 4 megawatts (cogeneration) contributes to the overall energy efficiency of the property.
  • Reduced potable water consumption by 40% compared to industry benchmark.
  • Water efficiency measures used inside and outside the resort, including water-saving fixtures and fittings, smart irrigation system, and drought-resistant landscaping.
  • Over 75% of all construction waste was diverted from landfills, with nearly 32,000 tonnes of material recycled during construction.
  • Environmentally friendly materials, including low-emitting adhesives, sealants, paints and flooring, were used throughout development.
  • Regional materials were used, where possible, in construction development ($256 million in regional expenditure; 23% of total material cost).

Resort World’s sustainability program includes:

  • Alternative transportation: There are 16 electric vehicle parking spaces across the resort property; six public bus stops within a quarter-mile walk; preferred parking spaces for carpools/vans; and low-emission/fuel-efficient vehicles.
  • Single-use plastics: Dispensers of bulk welcome products in the rooms and water bottle filling stations throughout the establishment contribute to limiting the consumption of single-use plastic bottles.
  • Waste Management: A comprehensive diversion program sorts and separates the resort’s recyclables and food waste.
  • Indoor air quality: A patented air ionization systemcoupled with demand ventilation technologyprovides unparalleled indoor air quality throughout the complex.
  • Environmental Management System: The resort’s Environmental Management System (EMS) has been ISO certified by a third party (ISO 9001 Quality Management; ISO 14001 Environmental Management; ISO 50001 Energy Management).
  • Event impact statement: A Meeting Calculator can provide custom environmental reports for on-property events and meetings.
  • Health and wellbeing: The property has earned GBAC STAR accreditation and is Sharecare Health Security VERIFIED with Forbes Travel Guide.
  • Social impact: Over 25 charity partners in the local community, supported by volunteer activities and philanthropic donations.

Resorts World joins the ranks of six other LEED-Gold buildings in Nevada’s hospitality industry, including MGM Resorts’ CityCenter and its ARIA Resort & Casino, ARIA’s Convention Center and Theater and the Vdara Hotel & Spa; and the Venetian Convention and Exhibition Centre. The Palazzo at The Venetian Resort Las Vegas received LEED Silver certification in the spring of 2008.

Las Vegas is also part of a global network of more than 100 LEED-certified cities and communities. In August 2020, the city completed LEED certificate to implement practical and measurable strategies and solutions to improve sustainability and the standard of living for residents.

In partnership with Hilton, Resorts World Las Vegas integrates three of Hilton’s upscale brands into its resort campus, including Las Vegas Hilton, the resort’s full-service brand; Conrad Las Vegas, Hilton’s luxury lifestyle brand; and LXR, Hilton’s network of independent luxury properties, which operates as Crockfords Las Vegas, Genting’s ultra-luxury brand.

Built on the former site of the iconic Stardust Resort and Casino, the $4.3 billion Resorts World Las Vegas The resort features 3,506 guest rooms and suites, a next-generation casino, premium dining and beverage offerings, a 5,000-seat theater, nightlife venues, upscale retail outlets and 250,000 sq.ft. squares of meeting and event space.

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — The Las Vegas Loop project took a giant leap forward on Friday when the Boring Company brought its tunnel system under the Strip to Resorts World.

The Las Vegas Loop is expected to connect resorts up and down the Strip, extending to downtown, Orleans, UNLV and – one day – the airport.

But this first step beyond the Las Vegas Convention Center, where the system is already operating, is an important development in the progress of the project. The tunnel systems use Tesla electric vehicles.

A sign inside Resorts World directs visitors to a future resort for the Las Loop project. (Greg Haas/8NewsNow)

The head of the digging machine crossed the earth on Friday, facing south along a path just west of the Strip passing a likely location for a resort that Resorts World had already posted on signs inside from the station.

The first steps of the Las Vegas Loop will be connecting to Resorts World and Wynn Las Vegas, both of which have agreements in place. After that, it is unclear in which direction the construction will go.

The project is greenlit with Clark County through a franchise agreement. The cost should be between the bus fare and a typical charge via Uber or Lyft.

The company’s plan is to extend the loop to 29 miles. It would have 51 stops along the Las Vegas Strip corridor, including downtown and Allegiant Stadium.

The company says visitors and locals will be able to use the system. No taxpayer money will be used. The deal is that the Boring Company will fund the tunnels and the hotels will pay for the construction of their own stations.

Just over a year ago on the Las Vegas Strip, a spate of violent crime made headlines in a tourist corridor emerging from an unprecedented economic shutdown.

Despite police efforts, sporadic acts of violence on the Strip persisted until 2021 as millions of visitors returned.

Last year there was a shootout in Aria’s valet, gunfire on the MGM Grand casino floor, a stab in The Venetian, a shootout in front of Paris Las Vegas, a shootout in front of the Miracle Mile Shops, and a scrum in Encore at Wynn Las Vegas.

“We’ve had unique crime waves that hit Las Vegas and quite frankly it’s been happening across the country,” said Metropolitan Police Department captain Dori Koren, who oversees the area command. from the convention center which includes the Strip. “Like any other big city, we started to see an increase in some crime. We managed to manage it and get it under control. It kind of resurfaced last year, and I’m proud to say we’ve made a lot of progress in dealing with it.

Police responded to the wave of crime by conducting Operation Persistent Pressure, using a strong officer presence on the gang to combat an increase in aggravated assaults. This year, they made 52,000 pedestrian and vehicle stops across the convention center area command, confiscating more than 500 guns and making more than 9,000 arrests, Koren said.

In January, a shootout seriously injured a man outside The Venetian. In March, a Wynn Las Vegas employee shot dead a security guard before killing himself on the property. In August, a man was shot and killed at a motel on the 3900 block of Las Vegas Boulevard South. On September 22, a gun battle seriously injured a man in the 3700 block of Las Vegas Boulevard South. And, on November 7, a man was shot and paralyzed in a morning shootout on Flamingo Road and Las Vegas Boulevard.

“I can’t say it’s perfect, but we always strive to be perfect,” Koren said. “Each crime, each victim is a priority for us. This is not a zero sum game. It’s not like the crime goes to zero. We are constantly trying to reduce it. But we are much better off than we were.

Aggravated assaults

In the area command of the convention center, which also includes important areas to the east and west of the strip, the number of aggravated assaults continued to increase in 2021. As of November 26, there are had 426 aggravated assaults, up from 412 in 2020, representing a 3.4 percent increase. Authorities see this as a success given the increase in visitors to the Strip in 2021, as well as the fact that last year, when the Strip reopened, police faced a 29% increase. the same type of assault.

Murders, meanwhile, rose 58% across Metro’s jurisdiction, mimicking a national trend in rising homicide rates across the country. Murders have also increased in the convention center area to 11 in 2021, from 1 in 2020, though the majority of those homicides took place off the Strip.

“A lot of our violent crimes don’t happen on the Strip where tourists go to dine,” Koren said. “It’s happening on the outskirts, maybe a bit to the east, maybe a bit to the west, pockets of residential areas.”

Clark County Sheriff Joe Lombardo cautioned against comparing 2021 crime statistics with 2020, given that the Strip and much of the Las Vegas economy have been closed for decades. month. In all of Metro’s jurisdictions, violent crimes such as murder, rape, robbery and aggravated assault declined nearly 12% in 2021 from the previous year, while violent crime increased. increased by 4.3% in the command of the convention center area.

Property crime on the rise

Lombardo said police are seeing another “embarrassing” increase in 2021 in property crimes such as burglaries, theft and motor vehicle theft.

“Significant increase in motor vehicle theft to the tune of over 20 percent,” Lombardo said. “Theft, an increase of 8%. It’s embarrassing and it’s an integral part of supply chain and parts and parts issues in and out of stolen vehicles, vehicle theft for transportation due to the unavailability of new cars and cars from opportunity. We know it, we are aware of it, and we are devoting resources to addressing it. “

Lombardo said a trend of stealing catalytic converters from vehicles and then reselling them on the black market has also played a role in the rise in the number of property crimes.

“The problem with the catalytic converter – it hasn’t diminished,” Lombardo said. “We have taken a significant number of individuals into custody as a result of this particular crime. People are taking advantage of the shortage of parts and parts.

In the convention center area command, property crimes increased 49% in 2021 compared to 2020, with motor vehicle thefts increasing by almost 75%, burglaries by 50% and theft by 46%. Koren, however, said the numbers were inflated against the backdrop of the 2020 economic shutdown.

“When you compare it to 2019, we do pretty well when it comes to burglaries and theft,” Koren said. “Auto theft, however, is a problem. We recognize it and we have made it a priority. We are seeing more and more stolen vehicles no matter what year you compare it to.

A delicate balance for tourism

Christopher Herrmann, an assistant professor at the John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York City, said many large metropolitan areas in the United States are grappling with an increase in crime.

“It’s definitely not a good image,” Herrmann said. “We had a very significant increase in crime in 2020, and many of us expected crime to decrease once society started to reopen again, people went back to work and students returned. at school. The economy improved, but crime remained high. “

Anecdotal evidence indicates that some of the crimes are linked to the COVID-19 pandemic and mental health stress, Herrmann said. This does not explain everything, however.

Peter Tarlow is President of the World Tourism Network and a global expert in tourism safety. He said he believed Las Vegas was doing a great job protecting tourists on the Strip and that no city was safe from acts of violence in the aftermath of the pandemic.

An important aspect of tourism security, he said, is preventing major episodes of crime, which in turn protects the city’s reputation. He believes part of the increase in crime in the United States is due to reforms in the criminal justice system and the reluctance of prosecutors to be tough on crime.

“Last week I was in Israel and one of the questions I was asked was, ‘Is it safe to go to the United States?’ Said Tarlow. “Most Americans are sort of laughing about it, but they (foreign tourists) read that the car hit in a Christmas parade, people stabbed in the New York subway. Crime statistics are exploding in the United States. If you are in Tel Aviv or Jerusalem, do you want to go to the United States for sightseeing? “

This dense cluster of entertainment attractions in this area of Las Vegas Boulevard was further intensified by the recent opening of FlyOver Las Vegas, right next to the Hard Rock Cafe.

FlyOver is an immersive virtual flight that attaches passengers to a 52-foot spherical screen, sending them soaring over the world’s most iconic vistas and natural wonders. And while passengers are suspended with their feet above the natural wonders, the sequences of the experience are strategically aided by the multisensory special effects of wind, mist and natural scents.

FlyOver Las Vegas is the most advanced and largest of the growing number of FlyOver chains of aerial rides by attractions and hospitality company Pursuit.

At a cost of US $ 50 million, it occupies more than 50,000 square feet of prime commercial real estate on the Strip. Clearly visible signage on Las Vegas Boulevard directs shoppers to the main entrance with a hole in the wall that was previously the front of the Famous Footwear store. Guests are then led through a highly Instagrammable illuminated ‘Endless Hallway’ that leads to the former United Artists Showcase Theater – now transformed into two flying theaters for FlyOver.

From the main entrance, passengers pass through three areas to reach a vast hall that bears the theme of the bottom of a canyon.

“The purpose of theming here is a decompression zone. Everyone’s crazy on the Strip; there are strippers, snakes and all kinds of stuff going on there, ”said Jack Kenn, managing director of FlyOver Las Vegas, on a media tour.

“So we want everyone to come in, the section is very light and airy, we are trying to tell you what FlyOver is, we are trying to get you excited about what it is. This is the first step. Adjust your eyes while being outside, then you get your tickets… We descend lower and lower into the canyon as we enter our lobby. All this helps us to decompress, we forget everything that is happening. This is part of the self-guided trip. We’re just trying to decompress here and get away from everyday life.

The lobby also serves as a waiting area and a full-service bar, named The Lost Cactus, where passengers can enjoy beer, craft cocktails, mocktails, wine, and snacks before or after take-off. The bar is accessible without a ticket.

As a mock-up of an airport gate, digital signage and helpful staff notify passengers in the lobby when it’s time for them to embark on their planned journey.

Before being strapped into their flying seats, passengers are guided through a pre-show experience – first to a boarding area, then to a circular room with 360-degree wraparound projection walls and a central screen suspended in the shape of a medallion. This pre-show, designed by Montreal-based Moment Factory, sets the stage for the flying ride as part of the overall storytelling, providing a deep sense of belonging.

The original scores for the FlyOver Las Vegas Pre-Show and Flying Ride were composed by Grammy-nominated Tom Holkenborg, who was also the originator of the soundtracks for Mad Max: Fury Road, dead Pool, Godzilla vs. Kong, and Zack Snyder Justice League.

For all those who have rolled Soaring in Disney theme parks around the world, the concept of FlyOver should be familiar. FlyOver’s original ride to Vancouver wasn’t just inspired by Soaring but it was made by its creator.

Rick Rothschild was executive show director at Walt Disney Imagineering for over 30 years, until 2009. He is hailed for inventing the immersive flight experience; he was responsible for the creation of Soarin ‘, which premiered at Disney California Adventure in 2001.

Rothschild has been the Creative Director of the four FlyOver attractions to date, in which he has designed every aspect of what customers see in FlyOver. While he now has his own business developing creative concepts for attractions, he still occupies a pivotal role as a consultant for Disney Imagineering.

Although there are conceptual similarities, the driving technology used by FlyOver Las Vegas is much more advanced than that currently used by Soaring.

FlyOver Las Vegas uses state-of-the-art mobile platforms made by Brogent Technologies of Taiwan, which have six degrees of movement that allow customers to experience more movement. On the other hand, Soaring has only four degrees of motion.

Kenn notes that the ride, camera, and projection technologies used in Las Vegas are also more advanced than the original FlyOver ride in Vancouver.

Additionally, the Las Vegas attraction has a higher capacity, with two identical flying theaters as opposed to the unique flying theater of the other attractions.

Each flying theater in Las Vegas has a capacity of 40 passengers. In each theater, passengers are split over two levels, with each level containing two 10-person mobile platform pods.

With each flight experience – both the pre-show and the flight combined – taking around 30 minutes, FlyOver Las Vegas is capable of handling four trips per hour, accommodating thousands of passengers per day.

Currently, FlyOver Las Vegas dedicates a theater to the screening The real Wild West, and the other theater for Fly over Iceland. Kenn explains that while double rides at other FlyOver attractions are accomplished by letting passengers stay in their seats, FlyOver Las Vegas requires them to board the other theater. This system offers Las Vegas passengers the unique flight-specific boarding and pre-show experience to ensure they are “connected” to the full story of the flight.

Using the secondary theater, other flying rides that will eventually be presented by rotation include Fly over Canada, Fly over America, and Hawaii seen from above. There are synergies to be gained as FlyOver’s network of attractions grows and introduces more of the planet, with each attraction sharing films for alternate rides.

FlyOver Canada opened in 2013 in the former IMAX theater in Vancouver, the Canada Place convention center and the cruise ship terminal. Its eponymous merry-go-round captures the scale, beauty and geographic and urban diversity of Canada.

In 2016, FlyOver America opened inside the Mall of America in Bloomington, but it’s under a different ownership structure, outside of the Pursuit collection.

Pursuit opened FlyOver Iceland in a new purpose-built building in September 2019. They also plan to open a second FlyOver Canada attraction in 2024 in downtown Toronto, in a new purpose-built building near the base of the CN Tower.
