Pahrump Valley baseball struggling in Vegas
The Pahrump Valley Trojans baseball team had a tough time against teams in the Las Vegas Valley over the holiday weekend.
The Trojans have flown two teams to play games in Las Vegas – an U16 team and an U18 team.
The U16 team played two doubleheaders over the weekend, starting with a two-game series against Faith Lutheran.
Pahrump Valley High School baseball head coach Roy Uyeno said many of the team’s players were between the ages of 14 and 15. A good number of players had just participated in the Little League All-Stars tournament the previous week.
In their first game of the double header against Faith Lutheran last Friday, Pahrump Valley took an early lead, but they couldn’t hold on.
Cody Friel pitched well for the Trojans against the Crusaders.
He pitched two innings, allowing just three hits and allowing two runs while striking out four batters.
In the second game against Faith, things turned out differently for the Trojans. Although they didn’t come away with the win, Pahrump kept the game close and even came back from several runs to take the lead in moto four.
The Crusaders were just too much for the Trojans and eventually won the second game by a score of 10-8.
The U16 team’s doubleheader on Sunday went the same way. This game was against Sierra Vista High School.
The Trojans dropped out of both games, losing each time by run-of-the-mill rule.
Despite having plenty of young players, Pahrump’s U16 side showed flashes of good play and solid striking in all four games.
With a few years of growth and maturity, in addition to gaining more experience, Uyeno and his team will be able to better prepare this group of children in the years to come.
The U18 team suffered the same fate as the U16 team.
They went 0-4 in their matchups. The Trojans took on Faith Lutheran’s U18 squad on Saturday night, then followed that up with a doubleheader against Durango High School on Sunday night.
Uyeno mentioned that he only has one PVHS varsity player on his U18 squad. Other players from the high school team played for the club team.
Pahrump Valley will have a few more matchups in the coming days. They will head to Centennial High School this Saturday, July 9 for a doubleheader starting at 5 p.m.
After that, they’ll be back at Faith Lutheran on Monday, July 11, this time just for one game. This game will start at 7 p.m.
Their last game will be on Tuesday, July 12 when they travel to Sierra Vista again for a game starting at 5 p.m.
