Las Vegas police arrest suspect in fatal hit-and-run near Strip

Las Vegas police made an arrest in a fatal hit-and-run accident earlier this month in the Central Valley.

Micihael Hughes was sentenced to the Clark County Detention Center on Thursday on one count of failing to stop at the scene of an accident and one count each of destroying or concealing evidence and failing to provide information at the crash site, the two misdemeanors, Las Vegas Justice Court Newspapers show.

The 43-year-old suspect is due in court on Friday morning.

Shortly before 7 p.m. on January 3, Leeland Rayburn was on East Sahara Avenue near Santa Rita Drive when he was struck by a white Jeep Grand Cherokee, police said.

The 37-year-old pedestrian, who was outside a crosswalk, later died at the University Medical Center.

In the days that followed, police released a photo and description of the Jeep as well as a surveillance image showing the alleged driver.

“We started with a description of the vehicle which led us to locate the vehicle which led us to locate the driver!” police wrote on Twitter on Wednesday.

A copy of Hughes’ arrest report was not immediately available.
