‘It’s a crisis situation right now’, baby formula shortage affects Las Vegas families and organizations

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) – Finding formula has been a huge task for many families across the country and here in Las Vegas some families travel all over the valley just to find the one they need.

“Hoping and praying we can get to the store at the right time when they fill the shelves,” said Mary Rendina, who is babysitting her granddaughter Mia.

Rendina said recently that they went into panic mode because Mia’s parents only had one box of formula left. “My husband and I were visiting our son in California, we took him around town in San Diego and couldn’t find him in any stores.”

The shortage fueled by supply chain issues and recent recalls is leaving staff at local diaper banks like Baby’s Bounty feeling helpless. “It’s a crisis situation right now,” said Kelly Maxwell, executive director of Baby’s Bounty.

Maxwell said she receives dozens of calls from frantic parents each week. “People would come and get a can or two every day and now we’re almost empty,” Maxwell said.

Some parents may resort to rationing formula, but Dr. Carrie Wijesinghe of Siena Pediatrics says it can be deadly. “Please don’t dilute it, you can throw away your child’s electrolytes and in the end it can lead to brain swelling and the child can unfortunately pass,” Dr. Wijesinghe said.

Whichever brand you use, you should follow the serving suggestions to keep your baby healthy.

Dr. Wijesinghe said if you can’t find the brand your baby needs, you can use a generic store brand, but only if they are in the same category with similar ingredients.

Many retailers also limit the amount of formula you can buy.
