Funeral of Las Vegas cop killed by falling beam

LAS VEGAS (AP) — A funeral service is scheduled for Monday in Henderson for a Las Vegas police detective who was killed when a steel beam fell on his vehicle in a construction zone.

Las Vegas Metropolitan Police officials say Justin Terry, 45, was in his unmarked, on-duty police vehicle when the beam fell on U.S. Highway 95 last Friday.

Authorities said he died at the scene.

According to Metro Police, Terry had been with the police department for nearly 21 years and is survived by a wife and two sons.

Nevada Highway Patrol said a tractor-trailer carrying an excavator with an oversized load hit the beam, knocking it over.

The large steel beam is perched 15 feet above the freeway and warns drivers of low clearances due to upcoming bridge construction, according to the state Department of Transportation.

Authorities told the Las Vegas Review-Journal that an investigation into the crash is to determine if the tractor-trailer was properly licensed to carry an oversized load in the construction project area.

Investigators were also trying to determine if the beam was properly installed as part of a low-clearance freeway warning system.
