Carson Valley Northern Nevada Giving Tree Celebrates 4 Years, $ 100,000 in Giving | News from Carson City, Nevada
Four years ago, Gardnerville real estate agent Ginger Easley and his dear friend Toni Van Winkle discussed ways to serve local nonprofits, but were unsure of where to start.
The couple researched options and founded Northern Nevada Giving Tree to solicit donations for the 501 (c) (3) area. Since its inception, NNGT has donated $ 103,750 to organizations in Carson Valley.
Easley said she and Van Winkle were delighted with the results.
“Even during tough times our community has shown kindness and generosity,” Easley said. “People really want to give, but they often don’t know who to give. “
NNGT holds quarterly meetings where each attendee contributes $ 100 and the name of their preferred regional nonprofit. Names of nonprofits go into a hat and at the end of the hour four names are selected. The group then votes for one of these nonprofits to receive the money raised that evening.
“Our goal is to spend 20 minutes learning about the different nonprofits, 20 minutes discussing the four hatch nonprofits, and 20 minutes voting,” Easley said. “Get in, get out, easy.”
Last quarter, Carson Valley Active 20-30 Club # 85 received a check for $ 6,000 from NNGT. Robbie Boulais, club president, said the NNGT donation was a total surprise.
“With the donation received, we will allocate $ 5,000 to a special project that we call the ‘Improvement Project’ to which we will match $ 5,000 from Club funds,” said Boulais. “We will be working with the Douglas County Parks Division to determine which local parks in the Carson Valley could use improvements or new play equipment for children. The additional $ 1,000 will be used for essential relief for the Tamarack firefighters. “
The NNGT meets quarterly at the Carson Valley Inn, although during the pandemic the group has turned to online donations. The group meets at CVI this Thursday, October 21 from 5:30 p.m. and welcomes new members. Online donations can be made at: https://giving.group/northernnevadagivingtree
“We love that new people join our organization and can introduce us to 501 (c) (3) organizations that may not be as well known as some of the others,” Easley said. “We believe that all of these organizations deserve to be known, to raise awareness and to receive our donation.”
Previous recipients include Literary Solutions of Nevada, Carson Valley Food Closet, Between Horses and Humans, Austin’s House, Boys & Girls Clubs of Western Nevada, The Center for Hope and Healing, Moxy Up, Suicide Prevention Network, WAVE, Grace Christian Academy and Carson Valley Medical Center Foundation.
